Noio Games is a small studio led by Thomas van den Berg, creator of the Kingdom Series. It’d be easy to gush about how relaxing and meditative a game Cloud Gardens is. You plop two bottles of beer down beside them. On one chair you sit a garden gnome, on the other, a rubber duck. Use the photo mode to show off your creations. In Cloud Gardens this is a set of plastic chairs that you place up on the balcony of a brutalist high-rise.

Discover a dozen different seeds and learn how to make them thrive. Plant your seeds in the right place to create small overgrown dioramas with hundreds of different items and progress through the stages in six chapters. The visuals of this game are absolutely stunning. In Cloud Gardens the player overgrows lo-fi scenes of urban decay and manufactured landscapes.

Items are unlocked from scenes to be used in the Sandbox Mode. A balancing act of placement of seeds and 'junk' objects to perpetuate growth. A progress meter fills based on growth/fruiting to move onto the next scene. Through growing they produce fruit to harvest that allows for further seed purchases to continue building a more densely grown scene. Feeling empowered by nudging nature to overtake our own wastelands is a role-reversal I wasn't expecting.Ī linear progression of world-level style structure. Collecting fruit to continue growing is mindless and engaging all at once. Watching plants grow is endlessly rewarding. There's just enough freedom mixed with chaos and intention that allows for a beautiful balance between relaxation and purposeful execution.

Much like Animal Crossing or Townscaper, this has hit at the perfect time of quarantine/covid/climate-change and is an almost optimistic look for the impending apocalypse.
